The BYD Seal 06GT is often described as the "first GT for young people." With its sporty appearance, 310 kW of system power, front double-ball-joint MacPherson struts + rear multi-link suspension, and dual-motor all-wheel drive, it's easy to see why it appeals to young consumers looking for a high-performance ride. But as a GT, it’s not just meant for city driving. Can the Seal 06GT's range handle long-distance trips? And can it keep energy consumption low enough to be kind to the wallets of young drivers? Let’s put it to the test.
One-Sentence Review of the Seal 06GT:
Compact yet powerful, it's the ideal ride in the minds of young drivers.
Advantages:
1. The all-wheel-drive model offers strong performance.
2. The in-car system is highly functional and smooth.
3. The exterior design is incredibly sporty.
4. It’s one of the few cars at this price point to feature FSD.
5. The seats are fairly comfortable.
Disadvantages:
1. The top-tier model exceeds 180.000 RMB.
Instead of using traditional light and optical tests to evaluate the vehicle’s range, this time we’ll drive cross-city and primarily use highways to simulate real long-distance travel scenarios. The route will take us from downtown Guangzhou to downtown Zhuhai, covering 117 km. Before setting off, we’ll reset the trip meter and record the vehicle’s displayed remaining range. Upon arrival, we’ll compare the actual mileage traveled with the remaining range to calculate the vehicle’s range efficiency, as well as examine the vehicle’s average energy consumption.
The Seal 06GT is built on BYD’s e-platform 3.0 Evo, featuring cutting-edge technologies like the CTB battery-body integration and a highly efficient 12-in-1 intelligent electric drive system. These innovations enhance the vehicle’s efficiency and driving experience, providing users with a superior driving experience. From the moment you get behind the wheel, the Seal 06GT feels highly responsive, with precise steering and excellent high-speed stability. Plus, with the FSD variable damping suspension, body roll is minimal during quick lane changes, and the system provides real-time feedback from the road, boosting driver confidence.
In the all-wheel-drive version we tested, we also had the benefit of iTAC, an intelligent torque control system. iTAC builds on wheel-speed sensors by adding motor rotation sensors, increasing recognition accuracy by more than 300 times. It can predict wheel-speed trends up to 50 milliseconds in advance. When the system detects an anomaly, but before any wheel slip occurs, it adjusts torque distribution to restore stability, improving safety.
As for performance, the 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds of the Seal 06GT’s all-wheel-drive version means that in any driving situation, the power is always immediately available. High-speed overtaking is effortless. The throttle response is quick, giving you a consistent "follow-through" feeling. The car’s power delivery fully meets the expectations of young consumers seeking "sportiness."
After driving more than 100 kilometers on the highway, we finally arrived at the Zhuhai Grand Theatre, also known as the "Sun Moon Bay." According to the vehicle’s displayed remaining range, we calculated that the Seal 06GT achieved a range efficiency of 103% during this long-distance test. It’s worth noting that we didn’t push the speed, and the air conditioning was running normally throughout the trip. This result is a testament to the car’s impressive capabilities.
Beyond its solid range, the vehicle’s energy consumption was also quite low. For nearly 50 km, the average energy consumption was around 12-13 kWh/100 km. In other words, even during peak charging cost periods, the cost per kilometer is just over 0.1 RMB, which is extremely economical.
In the era of gasoline cars, the term "GT" was typically associated with high-end, expensive models like the Continental GT or Maserati GT. But now, Chinese electric vehicles have redefined what a GT can be, making it more accessible than ever. The Seal 06GT, for example, offers a high-performance experience in terms of comfort, power, and handling at a more affordable price point. This is likely why it’s being called "the first GT for young people."
