The BYD Sea Lion 05 DM-i is a new compact model in the Sea Lion lineup under BYD's Ocean series. It’s been almost a month since the car launched, but unfortunately, we haven't had a chance to test drive it until now. Finally, we have the opportunity to get up close with this new model, not only to evaluate its dynamic performance but also to see if it achieves the impressive fuel efficiency that BYD vehicles are known for.

1. Low energy consumption with BYD's fifth-generation DM system
2. Comprehensive configuration with abundant features
3. Spacious seating, with ample room in the rear
4. Functional DiLink system

Before discussing the car's dynamic performance, let’s briefly recap the basics of the Sea Lion 05 DM-i. The vehicle’s design is based on the "ocean aesthetic" philosophy, but with its own unique styling that sets it apart from models like the Sea Lion 07 EV. The overall lines exude a sense of power, giving the Sea Lion 05 DM-i a stable yet dynamic look.
In terms of dimensions, the Sea Lion 05 DM-i measures 4710/1880/1720mm in length, width, and height, respectively, with a 2712mm wheelbase, making it a standard-sized compact SUV. This class-leading wheelbase ensures ample passenger space, and even someone as tall as 185cm can sit comfortably in the rear without feeling cramped.
The interior of the Sea Lion 05 DM-i creates a stylish vibe, with its ocean-inspired cabin and dark accents, which cater to young consumers’ aesthetic preferences. BYD’s familiar rotating central control screen makes its appearance here too, as one would expect. Furthermore, the car features a gear shifter inspired by the "heart of the ocean," consistent with other new models in BYD's Ocean series.
In the top-trim model featured in our test, you can find L2 driving assistance, a 50W wireless charging pad, a 15.6-inch central display, a digital key for all scenarios, ventilated/heated seats, and more—an impressive set of features for this price range. From a value perspective, I would personally say that the 75km Premium model offers the best value across the entire lineup.
Under the hood, the Sea Lion 05 DM-i is powered by BYD's fifth-generation DM technology, featuring a 1.5L engine optimized for plug-in hybrids, an EHS hybrid system, and a high-power Blade battery tailored for plug-in hybrids. The engine provides a maximum power output of 74 kW, while the drive motor delivers up to 120 kW. With CLTC conditions, the pure electric range is available in 75km and 115km versions, supported by a lithium iron phosphate battery. Total range reaches up to 1400 km, and NEDC fuel consumption is just 3.79 L per 100 km when out of charge.
The primary objective of this test drive was to verify how close the real-world fuel consumption aligns with BYD’s official numbers. As usual, we started by refueling the car and then drove 105 km around Wuhan before returning to refuel. By calculating the actual refueling amount, driving distance, and battery consumption, we determined the real-world fuel economy of the car. Throughout the test, the car was set to ECO+HEV mode, with the air conditioning on at 24°C and the energy management system set to AI.
In the end, the Sea Lion 05 DM-i achieved an impressive 3.71L/100 km out-of-charge fuel consumption. Notably, we aimed to replicate a typical daily driving style for this test, without excessively lowering the speed or limiting the use of the air conditioning or entertainment systems. This fuel economy result highlights the inherent capability of the vehicle.
Moreover, throughout the test, we also appreciated the Sea Lion 05 DM-i’s comfortable ride quality. The suspension handled minor bumps quite well, avoiding any harsh jolts, while NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) performance was commendable, keeping wind and tire noise outside the cabin. Even when running out of charge and the engine frequently starting up, the transitions were smooth and unobtrusive.
Overall, the BYD Sea Lion 05 DM-i is undoubtedly a model well-suited to the needs of its target audience, with impressive fuel efficiency and comfort. It offers a comprehensive edge over similarly priced compact SUVs from joint ventures, particularly in fuel economy and ride comfort. Models like the Toyota Corolla Cross and Honda CR-V still sell over 10.000 units a month, which leaves plenty of room for the BYD Sea Lion 05 DM-i to carve out its own space in the market.
