Recently, BYD has launched two new models: the Seagull 05 DM under the Ocean series and the 2025 Song Pro DM under the Dynasty series. Apart from the exterior design and names, these two models are nearly identical in other aspects. However, compared to the 2024 Song Pro, both vehicles not only have weaker power performance but also come with a price increase. Could it be that BYD is trying to cash in on this?
Both the Seagull 05 and the new Song Pro are equipped with the latest fifth-generation DM hybrid system, still utilizing a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine. However, the maximum power and torque parameters have been reduced. The 2024 Song Pro's engine boasts a maximum of 110 horsepower and a peak torque of 135 Nm. In contrast, the 2025 Song Pro’s engine delivers only 101 horsepower, with the maximum torque dropping to 126 Nm. Furthermore, the 2024 Song Pro's electric motor had a maximum power of 145 kW and a peak torque of 325 Nm. For the Seagull 05 and the 2025 Song Pro, the electric motor's maximum power has been reduced to 120 kW, with a peak torque of just 210 Nm. From these figures, it’s clear that the new Song Pro and Seagull 05 have downgraded in terms of power performance.
Naturally, a decrease in performance should lead to lower costs. However, in reality, the price of the new Song Pro is higher than the 2024 model by around 3.000 yuan. In terms of configuration, there are no significant differences. The new models come with standard front and rear side airbags across the lineup, and the mid- and low-end trims now feature a 12.8-inch central control screen. The high-end versions also get two millimeter-wave radars, two ultrasonic radars, and 31-color ambient lighting. However, the number of speakers has been reduced by one.
Price-wise, the 2024 Song Pro is priced between 109.800 and 139.800 yuan, while the new Song Pro and Seagull 05 are priced between 112.800 and 142.800 yuan. The 2024 Song Pro offers better value, but the difference is minimal. Overall, when comparing the two, the new mid- and low-end models offer better safety features than the old versions. However, in terms of power, the new models are noticeably weaker.
Therefore, the new Song Pro and Seagull 05 seem to be more geared toward family use, trading performance for lower energy consumption. For young people who prioritize performance, these models might not be as appealing. As for whether the price increase constitutes a cash grab, it’s hard to say. After all, BYD has lowered the prices of plug-in hybrid models significantly. Two years ago, the Song Pro DMi started at around 130.000 to 140.000 yuan, and now it has dropped by over 20.000 yuan. The price increase of just 3.000 yuan, with some adjustments to performance and added features, can hardly be called a cash grab.
