BYD and Geely, two of China's most outstanding car manufacturers, have always maintained communication and competition with each other. Recently, the rivalry between the two escalated in the realm of battery technology. BYD had just announced the release of its second-generation Blade Battery, and immediately after, Geely unveiled its new God Shield Short Blade Battery. So, which is better – the long or the short blade?
BYD is well-known for its single-pin puncture test, but Geely’s God Shield Short Blade Battery passed an eight-pin puncture test and underwent additional extreme tests like fire burning and collision. It seems Geely is going all out this time. The energy density of BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery saw a significant increase, reaching 190Wh/kg, surpassing the industry leader, SVOLT Energy. Just when BYD thought it had gained the upper hand, Geely’s God Shield Short Blade Battery reached 192Wh/kg – just a bit higher. It feels like Geely is avenging the patent dispute over thermal efficiency from earlier this year. However, the editor believes that BYD’s battery data has garnered wider market recognition, showing higher reliability.
When giants clash, other competitors suffer. The competition between BYD and Geely seems to be squeezing the life out of their rivals. Geely is indeed an exceptional company, being one of the few Chinese car manufacturers besides BYD to rank among the global top 10. It boasts a wealth of core technological strength and numerous sub-brands contributing to its innovation, including Geely, Lynk & Co, Galaxy, Zeekr, Volvo, Lotus, and Polestar. Its solid R&D foundation, especially in engine technology, has made a qualitative leap since acquiring Volvo. It is now capable of going head-to-head with BYD, which is known for its "100.000-member R&D team." But what about the other automakers? Without sufficient market share or technological accumulation, it’s hard to imagine the difficulties they face in keeping up.
Geely is a formidable opponent that BYD has never underestimated! BYD has always been willing to invest heavily in core technologies and employs a "people-powered" strategy. Despite the high costs associated with this approach, BYD continues to pursue it. It’s because of strong competitors like Geely that BYD never slows down – and that’s what true competition is all about!
