How to Charge the BYD Tang EV at Home and Charging Duration

The long-awaited BYD Tang EV has officially been unveiled. Compared to the previous model, the new BYD Tang EV not only has significant changes in appearance and interior design but also in its configuration. For instance, regarding range and battery capacity, the new two-wheel drive BYD Tang EV boasts a CLTC range of up to 730 km, with other options including a 600 km deluxe version and a 635 km four-wheel-drive flagship model. The battery capacity has also been upgraded from the previous 86.4 kWh to either 90.3 kWh or 108.8 kWh. For a fully electric SUV like this, here's how you can charge it at home.

Method 1: Using the BYD Portable Charger

When purchasing the car, BYD provides an 8A 1.5 kW portable charger that can be plugged into a common household power strip to charge the Tang EV, adding about 1.5 kWh per hour.

- For the 90.3 kWh battery, charging will take approximately 90.3 kWh ÷ 1.5 kW ≈ 60.2 hours.

- For the 108.8 kWh battery, it will take approximately 108.8 kWh ÷ 1.5 kW ≈ 72.5 hours.

As you can see, using this charger results in very long charging times, with even the smaller battery taking over two days to fully charge. However, the advantage is that it is included for free with the car.

Method 2: Using the Pnord 16A 3.5 kW Portable Charger

Pnord is a company specializing in new energy charging equipment, with stores on platforms like Tmall and JD.com. The 16A 3.5 kW portable charger is one of their best-selling products. However, due to the motor limitations of the BYD Tang EV, the charging power can only reach up to 3 kW when using this charger.

- For the 90.3 kWh battery, it will take approximately 90.3 kWh ÷ 3 kW ≈ 30.1 hours.

- For the 108.8 kWh battery, it will take approximately 108.8 kWh ÷ 3 kW ≈ 36.32 hours.

This shows a noticeable improvement in charging speed. Additionally, the Pnord charger comes with a 2.4-inch display that allows you to clearly see the charging data, and it also has eight safety protections to ensure safe charging.

Method 3: Using the BYD Wall-Mounted Charging Station

If you find that portable charging is too slow, you can install a wall-mounted charging station at home. First-time BYD Tang EV owners who purchase within three months of the vehicle's release can apply for a free 7 kW home wall-mounted charging station. This charger can provide up to 6 kW of power.

It’s recommended to apply for a dedicated electricity meter before installing the BYD wall-mounted charging station. You can apply via your mobile phone or by visiting the local power company. Depending on local policies, the application for a new meter may or may not incur a fee. Once the meter is installed, you can either have a technician install the charging station or do it yourself.

When charging with the BYD wall-mounted station, you can charge at 6 kWh per hour.

- The 90.3 kWh battery will take approximately 90.3 kWh ÷ 6 kW ≈ 15.05 hours.

- The 108.8 kWh battery will take approximately 108.8 kWh ÷ 6 kW ≈ 18.1 hours.

This charging speed is quite ideal. Though it may take overnight to fully charge, charging for one night will typically meet your driving needs for the next day.

Method 4: Pnord 32A Portable Charger

While wall-mounted chargers offer fast charging speeds, the downside is their lack of portability—they can only be used at home. To address this issue, Pnord has developed a portable "7 kW charging station," the Pnord 32A portable charger. This charger eliminates the limitations of space, allowing you to charge your car wherever you have a 32A dedicated socket installed, providing the same effect as a wall-mounted home charger.

The reason for needing a 32A dedicated socket is that the 7 kW charging power is quite high, and standard household sockets cannot handle such power. Pnord provides a 32A socket with the charger, and you can purchase additional ones to install at places like your office, rural home, or stores. As long as you reach your destination, you can charge your BYD Tang EV at 6 kW using this portable charger, which can be carried with the car for charging on the go!
