BYD Qin Plus DM-i: One-Month Review - Pros and Cons

Introduction

Let me start by giving you a quick overview of the vehicle. My BYD Qin Plus DM-i is a plug-in hybrid with a pure electric range of 55 kilometers. The key strengths of this car are its quick acceleration and low fuel consumption, which many people praise.

Exterior Design

The exterior is quite standard, which suits me as I don’t have high expectations for car aesthetics, especially at this price point. Overall, the design is quite refined. The front end features what the sales rep called "dragon eye" headlights and sleek LED lights, which look quite cool. It has all the modern design elements like a fastback and a full-width taillight, which seems to be a popular trend nowadays. The car's appearance is overall quite decent.

BYD Qin Plus DM-i: One-Month Review - Pros and Cons

Interior

The light-colored interior is both gentle and elegant. The seats are very comfortable, and all the touchpoints are soft-wrapped, which I find practical and human-centric in design. Especially now that it's cold, the seats feel warm and cozy. The 12.8-inch central control screen is a bit small for my taste, but it supports rotation and has various smart features, which are pretty good overall. There's also NFC sensor unlocking, which frees up your hands—something we've all probably heard a lot about by now. However, the voice recognition and remote control features are surprisingly user-friendly while driving, much more so than I initially expected.

Fuel Consumption

As for fuel consumption, I've found that the pure electric heating performance is actually not inferior to that of a conventional fuel car. Under normal air conditioning use, the combined fuel consumption is about 4.6L/100km. You don’t have to skimp on using the heater to save money. I have to admit, the fuel efficiency is even better than I expected. Since I mainly use the car for commuting within the city, achieving such energy efficiency with the air conditioning on makes me think the costs will be even lower in the summer. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the purchase.

Drawbacks

One drawback is the limited rear space, which feels cramped both in terms of seat width and legroom. If the passengers in the back are a bit larger, fitting three people can be uncomfortable, and the seat comfort could also be improved. If you’re considering this car for family use, especially if you have a larger family, I would recommend experiencing the space in person to get a better idea.

Conclusion

Lastly, I have to mention BYD's service. The entire purchasing process was very pleasant, and the car was delivered promptly. The sales staff were also very enthusiastic about answering my questions, even after work hours. If you're on a budget, the high-end version of the Qin Plus DM-i with a 55 km electric range is definitely worth considering.
