Is it not recommended for ordinary consumers to buy the Xiaomi SU7? I disagree.

Today, a review of the SU7 by a Bilibili UP host hit the trending list. The video is from Fei Fei Che COOL's "Not Recommended for Ordinary Consumers to Buy SU7."

Fei Fei is an UP host I follow. First of all, she’s quite cute, and her first car was a Lamborghini, which is quite a talking point. Her video style is also pretty fun.

However, her wealthy family background and having access to a port mean that she cannot experience and review cars from an ordinary person's perspective. Thus, this video has generated a lot of controversy. Here are a few points of contention I see.

Controversy 1: Fei Fei believes that the comparison between 400V and 800V is like 3G versus 4G, with 3G being much slower than 4G.

But is this really the case? No, it isn't. The difference between 400V and 800V is nowhere near as vast as between 3G and 4G. If we must use internet speed as a comparison, it's more like the difference between 4G and 5G.

Is 5G fast? Very. But 4G is completely adequate, and even after years of 5G being available to the general public, it still hasn’t significantly differentiated itself from 4G in terms of usability. The same goes for 400V and 800V. The main differences between them are energy consumption and charging efficiency.

Is it not recommended for ordinary consumers to buy the Xiaomi SU7? I disagree.

First, let’s talk about energy consumption: For electric vehicles, energy consumption affects our driving range. However, range is not only determined by energy consumption but also by factors such as wind resistance, driving speed, temperature, and driving conditions. Not only consumers but even industry standard-setters may not notice a difference during use.

Next, let’s discuss charging: An 800V platform is undoubtedly good, but it also requires compatible charging stations. It’s like your phone supporting 60W fast charging, but if you only have a 5V1A charger and a regular charging cable, can you achieve 60W fast charging efficiency? No, you can’t. The same principle applies to 800V.

For Fei Fei, her family background means she will definitely use the latest technology. Being young, she probably didn't experience the 3G era for long, and she would have switched to 5G as soon as it was available. Hence, she directly compared 3G and 4G, not realizing that the difference isn't as significant.

Controversy 2: Fei Fei believes that the Xiaomi SU7's appearance will become outdated in 1-2 years, whereas a Mercedes C-Class won't.

The reason the Mercedes C-Class still looks current after 2-3 years is due to the traditional fuel car's family design style, which can last a long time. This is true for brands like Volkswagen, BMW, and Audi, and also for new energy brands like Li Auto and NIO.

Although Xiaomi currently only has one car, it is unclear whether the next model will continue this design as a family style. But even if it doesn’t, with the SU7’s blend of Porsche and McLaren aesthetics, will it really become outdated?

I believe it won’t. Porsche and McLaren designs have been classics for over a decade with little change, also following a family style. How could the SU7 be directly considered an old model?

Controversy 3: Fei Fei mentioned that 400V second-hand cars have low value because they are obsolete, whereas 800V cars will be all over the streets and can be sold at a good price. (3G products)

It's undeniable that 800V cars will be more expensive than 400V ones, but that’s only for new cars. Most people use a car for more than 4-5 years before considering a replacement, and electric vehicles inherently have a lower retention value due to their batteries.

In the current economic downturn, it's not uncommon for a car to be used for 9-10 years. Even after 10 years, a car’s value drops significantly regardless of whether it’s 800V or 400V.

I won't say much more, but there are still Seres SF5s from back then on the market. So why wouldn’t they sell?
